Florence and Emilia-Romagna are physically connected by mountains. The Apuan Alps, the most imposing part of the chain surrounding Tuscany, extend towards the Emilia-Romagna Apennines. Emilia-Romagna revolves around the great green heart of the Apennines, the Po Valley and the Adriatic coast. The ancient Via Emilia, built in Roman times, crosses it from Rimini to Piacenza, an artery that irrigates an area rich in culture and with a thousand-year history. The passion for cycling is the other bond that unites them with three of their sons, winners of the Tour de France: Gino Bartali, Gastone Nencini and Marco Pantani.

Great departure from Florence, the passage in front of the Bartali museum in Ponte a Ema, where the champion was born, and the arrival at the edge of the Adriatic beaches. This crossing of the Apennines will offer 3,800 m of positive difference in altitude, between the rather undulating pass of the Valico Tre Faggi and steep hills, the last of which is in the heart of the Republic of San Marino, just outside the finish line.
